The cool thing about helping Haiti through FRC is that I know that the canned goods I donated and the money I gave are all going to where they are supposed to go... the Haitians who need it. One of the things I love best about my church is that they see a need and they go to the person/group best equipped to meet that need and then throw their resources into supporting that person/group. No ego, no 'we have to do it ourselves', no publicity... just the Hands and Feet of Jesus.

So many organizations and individuals are suddenly coming 'out of the woodwork' with a pitch to help Haiti. Yesterday, I saw the homeless men/women who daily collect for 'Homeless Voice' carrying a plastic container with a sign that said 'help Haiti'! Give me a break. I went into a 'Quick Stop' store with a can on the counter asking for donations. When I asked the guy who they were collecting for, he had no idea; the can had just 'showed up' on the counter. Nothing makes me angrier than people/organizations that take advantage of tragedy to make a buck/or a name for themselves.

Even worse for me, is the multitude of churches that are rushing to send 'mission teams'of untrained people into an area they have never seen, worked with or been involved with prior to this horrific event. They have no idea why they are going or what they are going to do when they get there other than it is the 'in' thing to do. And seriously, don't hold a press conference before you get on the plane to let everyone know you are leaving!!! I don't have to be standing in Port-a-Prince to pray for the Haitians. Invest your empathy for the Haitians into a group that has been there helping/comforting/ministering to these precious people PRIOR to a week ago! Former president Bill Clinton was on Fox News yesterday saying he was doing everything he could through various UN organizations to get aid going where it was supposed to go, but then he went on to say to the interviewer who asked him' will you personally be going to Haiti to oversee the operations?' that the last thing the Haitians needed were more people getting in the way and that no one who is not a doctor, a rescue team or a member of a Red Cross-type organization should be going there.

Please let your compassion for your fellow man coming roaring out during this unbelievable horror that is now gripping the island nation of Haiti... get involved, open your wallet and show your heart - just do it with a group that you trust to do the right thing.

so proud to be part of FRC! growing up in Trinidad, i remember when my little native caribbean isle experienced earthquakes (not to this magnitude though) and the US jumped in sending help to us. now i have the honor and privilege to be part of a team in the US sending help to the caribbean.
